Pittsburgh Steelers tryout player Tre Tipton (No. 23), a former Pitt wide receiver, pulls in a catch during rookie minicamp Friday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex. Rookie draft pick Calvin Austin looks on.

Kenny Pickett isn’t the only former Pitt player taking part in Pittsburgh Steelers rookie minicamp this weekend.

Linebacker Chase Pine and receiver Tre Tipton also were among the 51 players on the field Friday at UPMC Rooney Sports Complex for the first day of camp.

The identities of 17 of those players were known for two weeks — the team’s seven draft picks and 10 undrafted free agents it signed in the hours after the draft ended April 30. Joining them were six first-year players, five of whom spent much of last season on the Steelers practice squad.

Also invited were 28 rookies on tryouts. Although those players are long shots to make the active roster, some — think, Devlin “Duck” Hodges three years ago — beat the odds.

Like most years, this year’s tryout crop includes several with local ties. Former Duquesne defensive back Leandro Debrito and former Robert Morris defensive back Tavin Harville were invited.

An Apollo-Ridge alumnus, Tipton played in parts of six seasons during an injury-riddled career at Pitt. Pine started 11 games over his time with the Panthers (2016-2021) that included a redshirt year.

Another player of note on a tryout is linebacker Gavin Greene. The former Mississippi College player is the son of the late Pro Football Hall of Famer and Steelers All-Pro linebacker Kevin Greene.
