In support of Yee Steck

Voters in New Monterey, Pacific Grove, Del Monte Forest, Carmel, Carmel Valley and Big Sur are fortunate indeed to have Annette Yee Steck willing to serve as Trustee Area One’s representative on our Monterey County Board of Education.

Annette has spent her adult life focused on improving the quality of education of students in public schools. Having served for 27 years on the board of the Carmel Unified School District, which ranges far beyond Carmel, Annette knows the territory and understands the issue and problems – and how to solve them. She has worked tirelessly improving academic quality and increasing college attendance rates, focusing relentlessly on those who have traditionally been underserved. By profession a school district financial advisor, Annette helps districts build new facilities and purchase new technology. She also guides and instructs trustees across the state.

With ballots now out, I urge you to join me in voting for Annette Yee Steck – the guarantee of a solid education for our youth is at stake.

— Karin Strasser Kauffman, Carmel Valley

We are lucky that Annette Yee Steck is available to serve on the Monterey County Board of Education.  Annette served with distinction as a trustee in the Carmel Unified School District.  Over that period, the District became – and remained – one of the top-performing districts in the state.  And for the past 18 years, she has taught trustees throughout the state how to do their jobs more effectively.  She has the skills, commitment, and energy to help ensure that the education of our children is as good as it can be.

— Senator Bill Monning (ret), Carmel

In support of Odello

Having been an elected official in Monterey County for nearly 40 years – first on my local school board, then on the Board of Supervisors and now as chair of the Monterey County Board of Education – I’ve learned to spot leadership.  Not just leaders who seemingly only want to feather their own nests, but leaders who were born with a passion to give back, those genuine leaders who people rally around to get things done.  Jake Odello is such a leader.

Jake is a leader in his profession.  As Director of Food and Industrial Safety for a large, local agricultural company, Jake works daily to keep our community safe.  And yet he still gives back, advising Hartnell College on their food safety program and teaching as an adjunct faculty member.  Jake’s leadership and expertise in this area dovetail well with the County Board of Education’s STEAM focus.

The County Board of Education needs a young leader, steeped in the sciences, who comes from public education, understands its needs and has a vision for its future.  Jake Odello is such a leader and will serve the Board well.

— Judy Pennycook

It is a pleasure to write in support of my brother, Jake Odello, for the Monterey County Board of Education.  My brother has a multitude of qualities that make him a good fit for the County Board, but what really sets him apart is his selfless attitude.  Jake takes great care in ensuring the needs of others are met before his own.  His passion for the student voice and top-notch educational quality are second to none. Understandably, I am biased toward one candidate, as he is my brother, but I wanted everyone to know the Jake Odello you see in public … caring, compassionate, honest, and attentive is the same Jake Odello in private.  What you see is what you get.  My brother is not a politician, he is a servant to the community. Our grandfather, Bruno Odello, always said that this community is paradise, Jake takes that to heart and wants nothing more than to give back to this community.

In support of Glenn Church

If you want a District 2 Supervisor who will give you authenticity, integrity, transparency, and visibility, vote for Glenn Church.   Glenn is the candidate who has knocked on more than 5,000 doors in an effort to personally connect with future constituents to learn about their dreams and concerns.  A strong advocate for the U.S. Constitution, Church demonstrates that “We the People” truly means government by and for the people.  As a county supervisor, he will be present in the community, serving the people with the same longstanding commitment to truth and service that he and his family have exhibited for decades.  As a King Foundation board director, Church champions its mission to educate all Monterey County eighth-grade students on the U.S. Constitution and its inherent values of liberty and unalienable rights.

Church espouses a regional approach to water supply solutions that benefit all citizens through creative, collaborative projects.  Church’s grassroots campaign is proof that the people count.  His exceptional community leadership demonstrates that character counts.  Church is a sorely needed voice and the winner we want!

In support of Regina Gage

I think most of us agree that the District 2 Board of Supervisors race is very important. The next county supervisor should live in our community; be someone who knows OUR NEEDS.

There is a lot of tax revenue from local cannabis sales as well as Federal infrastructure money we should be receiving. We need a supervisor who can hit the ground running and knows how to advocate and collaborate to get things done. That person is Regina Gage.

As the executive director of Meals on Wheels, Regina has led a team to transform this agency into a dynamic essential service. She has doubled their revenue stream and dramatically expanded their program. She was honored as an Unsung Hero by Nonprofits Alliance Monterey County for her innovative work during the pandemic where they created a program working with private, quasi-governmental and local restaurants to serve an additional 250 per day in addition to supporting locally-owned restaurants.

As the elected vice president on the Board of Directors at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital, she provides governance oversight to this $650 million health care system serving some of the most vulnerable people in our community. Regina will bring her high energy and dynamic leadership to the role of Monterey County Supervisor for District 2 to get our fair share of county resources and services. There’s a lot to be done in our district since we’ve been neglected for years but I’m confident Regina has the leadership experience, perseverance and character to do it.

In support of Tina Nieto

I’m voting for Tina Nieto for Sheriff. Easy choice. I’ve had the chance to meet her and attended a few forums. Impressive. Tina knows her stuff. Tina does not work for the Sheriff’s Office. That’s good. That department needs an outsider with fresh ideas and new blood. And Tina has decades of experience in law enforcement and has had several opportunities in her career to reform police departments mainly in the Los Angeles area. Currently, Tina is the police chief for Marina.

Tina began her career at LAPD and graduated first in her class in academics from the police academy. She rose to become the first Latina police captain in the history of the LAPD.

We’ve got a good choice here. Remember, we are on the hiring panel.

Yes on Measure B

With Biden’s excessive spending from Washington, the last thing we need is millions of dollars for another unused, over-priced, bicycle/walking path project. Look at the one on North Fremont Street.

We don’t need to change the character of our lovely residential community. Protect Del Rey Oaks. Help avoid another boondoggle. Please, vote YES to STOP the project. YES, on Measure B.

— Vince Tuminello, Del Rey Oaks
