Taliek Brown, UConn men’s basketball director of player development, is leaving the Huskies for a coaching position at Iona College.

Brown will join the staff of coach Rick Pitino as an assistant. At UConn, he worked closely with student athletes teaching them skills for on the court and in life.

The native of Corona, N.Y., gets the chance to get back closer to his home.

“It was a great opportunity for my career,” Brown told The Courant. “I get to go back home and work for a legendary coach. It was a great situation.”

UConn coach Dan Hurley and his staff told Brown it was great move for his career.

As a player, Brown had an impressive career at UConn. He was the captain of the Huskies’ 2004 NCAA championship team. He is the only player in UConn history to finish with 1,000+ points and at least 700 assists. He is the Huskies’ career leader in assists with 722.

Brown didn’t rule out coming back to Storrs in a coaching capacity.

“UConn will always be home,” he said.

He played 10 years of professional basketball, mostly overseas.
