Global Citizen 2021: How to watch and when to catch the best performers

The Global Citizen Live music festival is about to take over the world. Beginning on Saturday afternoon, the music marathon will be raising awareness — and coins — over 24 hours with hundreds of artists and other celebrities on six continents. Here’s when, how and who to watch at the event:

What is Global Citizens Festival?

Global Citizen Festival is a major outreach and fundraising event of Global Citizen, which was founded in 2008 to help end extreme poverty across the world. This year’s festival is also specifically benefitting the hunger crisis, climate needs of developing countries and COVID-19 vaccination distribution. (The latter issue is particularly important to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who will be attending the NYC concert to raise awareness.)

When is it?

You can watch it beginning at 1 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 25.

How to watch it on TV and stream online

You can stream it at globalcitizen.org/live/watch and on the Global Citizen YouTube channel. You can also stream it on Apple Music, Apple TV, Time.com and Global Citizen’s Twitter channel. Or you can watch it on ABC News Live, whose broadcast will also be available on Hulu and the Roku Channel.

Who is performing and where?

New York (Central Park)

Coldplay

Fresh off of playing the Apollo on Thursday night and releasing “My Universe,” their new single with BTS, on Friday, Chris Martin’s blokes are on a roll leading up to the release of their upcoming album, “Music of the Spheres,” on Oct. 15. And their anthemic-rock feels are just right for global event like this.

Billie Eilish

After headlining Gov Ball on Friday, Eilish will keep the festival festivities going with an appearance that proves exactly what the GCF means to the young artists of the moment, who will hopefully being using their pop powers for good for many years to come.

Jennifer Lopez

Say what you want about J.Lo — she will never be Mariah when it comes to singing — but the Bronx’s own Jenny from the Block is the consummate hustler of an entertainer who always brings it and looks fabulous while doing it.

Lizzo

When you need to feel “Good as Hell,” send Lizzo to the rescue. And after the last 18 months, some of her positive, endorphin-pumping vibes are more necessary than ever. Although it’s probably too much to hope for to want Cardi B to show up for “Rumors.”

The Fugees

Twenty-five years after killing it with “The Score,” Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean and Pras reunited on Wednesday night in a pop-up show at Rooftop at Pier 17 to tape a performance that will air during the New York portion of the show. It’s a moment in hip-hop history that you don’t want to miss.

Stevie Wonder

When a legend such as Wonder performs on such a high-profile stage, it’s a must-see moment. And still after all years of taking us to higher ground, no one can unite the world like Stevie can.

H.E.R.

After burning up the stage at Central Park in 2019, the Grammy-winning R&B star flips coasts for this year’s festival. But no matter — her guitar heroics would play well in the middle of Siberia.

Also appearing: Adam Lambert, Chloe x Halle, Demi Lovato, Migos. OneRepublic, Ozuna, the Lumineers, 5 Seconds of Summer

London

Duran Duran

The “Wild Boys” are back with an upcoming album — “Future Past,” out Oct. 22 — that shows they are still very much a part of the here and now.

Kylie Minogue

Although somehow Minogue is still not the pop goddess that she should be in the US, there’s a whole big world out there that worships her as a global icon. And anytime Kylie hits the stage, she demonstrates just why.

Also appearing: Nile Rodges and Chic, Rag’n’Bone Man

Paris (Champ de Mars)

Elton John

A painful hip injury has forced Sir Elton to postpone his farewell tour, but that won’t stop the Rocket Man from achieving GCF liftoff. And knowing that he can’t go on forever, we should appreciate him even more.
