God of War Ragnarok to Feature Different Shields, Devs Want to "Open Up" How Gamers Handle Loadouts

Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that there will be different shields in God of War Ragnarok, and that they want players to be more expressive in combat.

Added more rpg elements to the game

SullysCigar937d ago

I loved the last game already, but I could take a touch more depth like this. This is shaping up to be another classic in the making!

DarXyde935d ago

For sure, the added depth is very welcome.

Unpopular opinion here, but I really did not like God of War III. As a sequel to the outstanding God of War II, I just wasn't feeling it and a big reason for that was what I felt was a lack of depth or variety. The weapons felt too samey to me, Cestus gauntlets withstanding.

That said, I loved that God of War 2018 had a limited weapon set (but they were very unique, similar to the first God of War's choices between Artemis' Blade or the Blades of Chaos) and added to that with a changeable armor set. I'm a big fan of this direction. You don't need many weapons, but if there's more customization to really fit play style, I'm all for it.

excaliburps936d ago

Seems like it. I mean, it would be nice if we had different effective loadouts for Kratos rather than just one "endgame set."

Lore936d ago

Really would like their unannounced IP to be a huge RPG

CaptainHenry916936d ago

I actually would like to see Naughty Dog try that

Lore936d ago

@captainhenry

I absolutely agree but while Neil Druckman is there I just don’t see it happening. He has hinted during interviews in the past that he likes these linear experiences. People praised TLOU 2 for being more open but in all honesty it is a bit pathetic how much praise they got for it, when there wasn’t even that much innovation and barely anything to do. I feel like it was simply because they were Naughty Dog

CaptainHenry916936d ago (Edited 936d ago )

Doesn't Naughty dog have two teams. Neil Druckman doesn't have to be the number one guy

Lore935d ago

@captainhenry

Yes of course, I just feel as if it is the overall culture of the studio and the genre they plan sticking to. This is just speculation and believe me, I would like nothing more than to be proven wrong on this. I want what you want without a doubt.

Naughty Dog and many of the American/ santa monica [Hollywood??] teams are tied up with Playstation Productions

While the original was great, the gear and skill system was pretty basic, so this is a welcome addition. Should mesh well with the deep and engrossing combat.

This may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't care for the gear management end of things. I just want to play the game. I don't want to have to worry about what armor and runes to choose to fight certain enemies or to wear in certain areas.

Welshy936d ago (Edited 936d ago )

You never had to wear certain runes for specific areas or enemies. Sure, if you wear the right ones that suit your play style you'll see some benefits, but it was far from a necessity to get through the story.

It struck just the right balance for me in terms of giving options to mix it up a bit without being overbearing like it became in the new Assassins Creed "RPG's".

The_Sage935d ago (Edited 935d ago )

You're right. You did not have to change up your armor and runes, but if you play on a harder difficulty for the combat challenge certain areas became impossible without the right runes and armor. I loved the game but I never felt like a God of War. The last of the seven valkieris was far more challenging than killing Helious? Or Zeus?

Also. While I'm bitching about a game really like... Why is there no blood? All of the enemies have yellow orange blood? In God of War 3 (my personal favorite) Kratos would be covered in the blood of those he'd killed. They kinda went PG 13 with it.

Edited for spelling.

cogniveritas935d ago

Easy mode is usually good for that. Let's you just play the game without worrying if the wrong loadout will sink you.

The_Sage935d ago (Edited 935d ago )

I like the challenge when it comes to combat, but some areas were impossible without armor and rune management. Dicking around with that stuff is not fun to me. Of course I did it because I love the game otherwise. It just takes away from the experience that was supposed to be seamless. No camera cuts, but you have to go into menus and screw around with all of this other crap if you want to succeed?

sourOG936d ago

I hope you can customize the stat armors. That’s one criticism I had of the first game. I like the customization but the stat stuff was unnecessary imo.

Magog936d ago

Nice. A few more side quests and we have ourselves another full blown RPG like Horizon.

TheDoomedGuy936d ago

Get rid of stats and ad diverse options. The game would be better without levels as well.

“ It's a great excuse to jump back into the fray with videogame’s second favorite Spartan.”

So you’re saying that the game Hades and its star character, never played it, are bigger more well known and liked than Kratos and the God of War series?

Armyofdarkness101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

He obviously means Kassandra, right?

Gamehard101d ago

I don't think the MC from Hades is a spartan though. Not 100% sure, but yeah I don't know of any other spartan game character that's more popular than Kratos.

Psychonaut85101d ago

Im guessing he’s speaking more broadly and is referring to Master Chief as the most popular “Spartan”

Abnor_Mal101d ago (Edited 101d ago )

That’s likely who it is, I don’t if Master Chief can be considered a “true” Spartan like Kratos lol.

Master Chief Spartan label is just a rank given in the Halo military, sorry not a Halo gamer so I have no clue what their army is called in the game.

But is Master Chief really more popular as a Spartan, interesting question.
