Q: I read about the scam calls telling drivers that their auto warranty was about to expire. Well, I got a call supposedly from the DMV saying my license renewal was late and that bad things would happen if I did not send in a credit card number and other personal information. Scam or not? I have ignored it.

Name withheld by request

A: It’s a scam call. The DMV will never ask for personal information related to a driver’s license number, Social Security number or financial information through unsolicited text, phone calls or email.

The DMV has heard from multiple customers who have received text messages directing them to an unfamiliar link. If a link does not direct customers to the main DMV website at dmv.ca.gov, it’s not from the DMV.

The DMV does not send customers unsolicited requests for information. When the DMV texts or emails customers, it is based on action initiated by them. For example, you may receive an appointment reminder or cancellation notice by text or email from the DMV. Customers may also receive an email related to DMV services that directs them to the dmv.ca.gov website to take an action if they choose.

You can report the phishing attack to the FTC at ftc.gov. If you receive a phishing email, forward it to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at reportphishing@apwg.org. For a phishing text message, forward it to SPAM (7726).

Q: What is going on with the construction on Interstate 5 about 20 miles south of Kettleman City? It looks like a possible widening of the highway with a long stretch of rebar being laid down.

Ed  Damoresix

A: This is a rehab project (not widening) to reconstruct the existing lanes with reinforced concrete pavement, hence the rebar. Crews are utilizing temporary lanes through the median to detour traffic while allowing work to occur. Caltrans is currently working along the southbound lanes and will switch over to the northbound side by late November.

Q: As a young elementary school student in the ’60s, I recall learning how to read a map. I was curious to see a double-dotted line named “West Valley Freeway (proposed)” going from South San Jose all the way to West San Jose “right over” the boundary of Athenour Elementary and Branham High. Yeah, right. A freeway? There? That’ll never happen.

What would we do without Highway 85 now?

Jason Higashi, San Jose

A: I cannot imagine it.

Q: I know I’m old but doesn’t everyone still call Highway17 the “Nit-wits”? Last time I drove through the area it still seemed apropos.

Fred Wood, Sonora

A: That’s a new one to me.
