MOUNTAIN VIEW – A 34-year-old Mountain View man has been arrested on suspicion of breaking into a woman’s apartment and trying to kill her, authorities said.

Officers were called to the apartment on the 2300 block of California Street just before 8 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a possible domestic disturbance, the Mountain View Police Department said in a news release. The person who reported the incident said they heard a man and woman arguing, with the man yelling, “I’m going to kill you.”

Police said a woman, later identified as the victim, also called 9-1-1 and told dispatchers a man had strangled her and taken her phone before leaving the apartment.

Officers searched the area and found a man who matched the suspect description at the Caltrain station on Showers Drive. He was taken into custody without incident.

The victim told investigators she had been sleeping when she awoke to find the suspect inside her apartment. She was able to get him to leave, but he returned a short time later and chased her back inside and attacked her, police said. Eventually, she was able to escape and call for help.

The victim and suspect knew each other, but they were not in a relationship, police said.

“This was not random and the public is not at risk,” police said.

The suspect was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County jail on charges of attempted murder, residential burglary and criminal threats.
