BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The Iowa men’s basketball team took a big step toward a double-bye in next week’s Big Ten men’s basketball tournament and provided a nice piece of work for the NCAA tournament’s selection committee Tuesday.
The Hawkeyes jumped on No. 15 Indiana from the start and stayed in front for a 90-68 win over the Hoosiers.
Iowa improved to 11-8 in the Big Ten, tied for fourth with Indiana. If the Hawkeyes beat Nebraska in Iowa City Sunday at 1 p.m. in their sold-out regular-season finale, they will have a chance to finish in the top four in the Big Ten’s tourney seeding. The top four automatically advance to next Friday’s quarterfinals.
The Hawkeyes are 19-11 overall, the Hoosiers 20-10. Iowa defeated Indiana for the fourth time in the last 14 months.
Iowa shot 55.6 percent from the field and was 13-of-23 for 56.5 percent from 3-point distance. Indiana was just 2-of-11 from 3-point. The Hawkeyes had a 39-27 rebounding edge.
Iowa junior guard Tony Perkins had 23 points, 10 rebounds, and a career-high eight assists. Teammate Kris Murray scored 26 points. Filip Rebraca and Payton Sandfort added 16 each.
Trayce Jackson-Davis had 26 points and 13 rebounds for Indiana.
Murray opened the game’s scoring with a pair of 3-pointers in the first 1:12 and Iowa was ahead 12-2 before three minutes had been played.
The Hoosiers pulled within 24-20, but the Hawkeyes then ran off 10 straight points. In that run, Perkins made a jumper, fed Patrick McCaffery for a basket on a back cut, then scored off a similar cut himself on Iowa’s next possession.
The Indiana native had 13 points and matched his career-high of six assists, the total he had in Iowa’s 112-106 overtime win over Michigan State last Saturday. Murray (15 points) and Rebraca (10) gave the Hawkeyes’ three double-digit scorers in the first half alone.
Iowa shot 60.7 percent from the field and buried 7 of its 12 3-point tries in its highest-scoring first half in Big Ten play this season.
