Rockies second baseman Brendan Rodgers is dealing with another injury.
Rodgers dislocated his left shoulder while diving for a ball in the infield in the second inning during Tuesday’s Cactus League game against the Rangers at Surprise Stadium.
A trainer popped the shoulder back into place while Rodgers was still on the field. The second baseman was shaken up by the play but he did leave the field under his own power.
“This was a pretty classic (shoulder injury),” manager Bud Black told reporters after the game. “The shoulder joint popped out on him and they put it back in. Not unlike (outfielder) Yonathan Daza last year.
“We’ll likely know more what (Rodger’s) status is in the coming day. The degree of trauma in the joint will determine how long he’s out. Hopefully, the trauma to the shoulder capsule is not too bad and he’s only out a few weeks.”
Daza was out nearly a month last season after dislocating his shoulder on a diving catch in center field. He was on the injured list from Aug. 12-Sept. 6.
Rodgers, who won his first Gold Glove last year, is hoping for a breakout season at the plate. But the third overall draft pick in 2015 has had a number of injuries in his career. In 2021, he suffered a hamstring strain during spring training March 13 and was not reinstated on the big-league roster until May 21.
Rodgers made his major league debut on May 17, 2019, but played in just 25 games before right shoulder surgery ended his season.
Last season, he played in a career-high 137 games, though he did spend time on the injured list from Sept. 19-29 with a left hamstring strain.
Rodgers ranked third among all second basemen with 137 hits, tied for third with 30 doubles and was fourth with 46 extra-base hits. After hitting .078 (4-for-58) in April, he batted .286 (136-for-476) from May 1 through the end of the season. Rodgers finished the season strong, hitting .429 (9-for-21) with one double and two home runs through his last six games.

On the mound: Austin Gomber got rocked in his first start of spring. The left-hander, who’s penciled in as a starter, lasted just two-thirds of an inning after being belted for four runs on five hits with one walk and one home run. Manager Bud Black told reporters that Gomber lacked pitch command and fell behind hitters.
At the plate: Charlie Blackmon and Cole Tucker hit back-to-back homers in the third inning and rookie shortstop Ezequiel Tovar launched a homer in the fourth. Tovar finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
