KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - A Kansas man was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison for selling heroin mixed with fentanyl to a man who fatally overdosed in 2017, prosecutors said.

Ramon Strickland, 44, of Kansas City, Kansas, pleaded guilty to one count of distributing on a heroin-fentanyl mixture that resulted in death, the U.S. attorney’s office said Monday in a news release.

The case stems from an emergency call in Overland Park, Kansas, on May 23, 2017 from a parent of the overdose victim. A toxicologist determined the victim died from respiratory distress caused by the drugs in his system.

Heroin is commonly laced with fentanyl to increase the high, but the combination can be deadly because fentanyl is 80 to 100 times more potent than opium.

Investigators determined that Strickland distributed heroin to the victim a day before the emergency call.
