A 73-year-old man who was shot in the chest during an attempted ATM robbery in the Falls Church area died on Saturday morning, Fairfax County police said.

Chief Kevin Davis said the department would start a homicide investigation.

The man was shot around 5:20 a.m. on Wednesday in the 2900 block of Annandale Road. He had stopped on his way to work to withdraw money from an ATM when a man approached and tried to rob him.

When the attacker pulled out a handgun, the victim was startled and dropped his wallet and its contents. As he turned to enter his ATM pin into the machine, the attacker shot him in the chest — a move that Davis said on Wednesday was “outrageous.”

The attacker fled without stealing anything from the victim, who was found by a bicyclist around 6:15 a.m. Despite emergency surgery, the man succumbed to his injuries.

No arrests have been made.
